Timun Emas is a traditional Javanese folktale of a lonely woman who longed for a child. Her wish was granted by a giant but the price was high - the giant will come back for the child when she has grown up. Evi Shelvia's retelling of this story gives a fascinating touch as she has added traditional elements such as the kuda kepang and in the clothes of the giant as well as other characters. In addition, the poetic Bahasa Malaysia text is a pleasure to read and recite. Here's what Evi has to say in her own words:

"Mengikut dongeng asal Timun Mas, raksasanya dikenali sebagai Buto Ijo, raksasa seram berkulit hijau. Namun untuk buku ini, Raksasa Puri saya inspirasikan dari watak di dalam tarian Topeng Keras dan Jauk Manis dari Pulau Bali. Keindahan gerak dan butiran pakaian penari diterapkan kepada Raksasa Puri untuk menjadikan wataknya lebih menarik. Di samping itu, inspirasi yang lain datang dari wayang golek, batik dan kuda kepang. Saya cuba menerapkan keindahan budaya Indonesia di dalam cerita Timun Emas ini, disamping mempermudahkan ceritanya supaya lebih sesuai untuk kanak-kanak."

EVI SHELVIA was born in Jakarta. She studied industrial design. In 2009 her family moved to Kuala Lumpur following her husband's new appointment. The first picture book she illustrated, The Gift of the Ladybug, was an Amazon bestseller on the first day of its launch. This encouraged her to illustrate children's picture books professionally. She has illustrated for a number of picture books both locally and internationally.
